Designs for Climate Resilient Beds in the Victorian Garden

The two beds to be developed into examples of climate-resistant planting are now being cleared. The one which gets most sun will feature planting that can survive the hotter temperatures. The other bed is more shaded and will feature plants that will thrive in dry conditions.

A garden club member, Mike Walker, has used his artistic talents to produce delightful sketches showing how these two borders could best display the plants. Based on these attractive designs, discussions are now underway to create a planting list.

The Cool Bed will be planted in shades of blue, white and cream with a dry stream bed, incorporating natural stones to reflect our position near the river. The Hot Bed planting will be in reds, oranges and yellows with brickwork and a more formal style to represent the town.

Plant sales at functions, and from the display by the museum door, have been consistently good. This is an important funding stream for the garden so hopefully customers will continue to provide this support. It is also hoped to find a supporting grant to allow a more ambitious project.

A Norwegian Blue Christmas tree was bought last year and it has grown on well in a pot. It will be decorated and on display by the garden railings in time for the Yuletide Festival.
