Archaeology Group Lecture: What Lies Beneath? Under floorboard excavations at Avebury Manor
19th May 2022 at 7:30 pm
Blandford Parish Centre, The Tabernacle, DT11 7DW
Our April lecture will be given by National Trust Archaeologist, Bryony Clifton.
Beneath our feet in the attic rooms of Avebury Manor were 500 years-worth of lost stories sitting in thick dust. We entered the room with little idea of what to expect from our excavation, but when a coin from the reign of Henry VIII was found within the first half hour, we realised we were about to undertake something special. The excavation has offered insight into the lives of owners and tenants of Avebury Manor through the centuries, including Alexander Keiller, the archaeologist who excavated the Neolithic site of Avebury Henge and stone circles.
